PostSubject: Great Death Squads Camo Tutorials: Urban, Traditional and more...   Fri Apr 16, 2010 3:01 am

EDIT: As requested, as tutorials merged. ENJOY!!!

Hi All,

Here is the recipe for my urban fighters camo with a few pics to give you the idea...

Undercoat Chaos Black (Undercoat spray is fine on plastics, but you'll need to base coat metal models with paint).
Drybrush/Overbrush with Adeptus Battlegrey (leave the deepest recesses black).

(I did this on the armour and cloth parts, but you could use a contrasting colour)

Wash armour with Badab Black (or Devlan Mud depending on taste).

Edge the armour only with Fortress Grey.

On each armour plate paint random splodges of Fortress Grey (this is a good way of tidying up inaccurate edging), ensuring that you only paint a 'splodge' on one part of the armour. IMPORTANT: Don't continue a 'splodge' from one armour section onto another part of the armour/cloth or the camo will look false and you will lose definition on the model.

Next using a 1:1 (roughly) mix of Chaos Black and Codex Grey to create darker camo splodges.

Finally, spot small amounts of Astronomicon Grey on the armour and your done!

This GW Article has loads of other camo ideas...

Ork Example...

Base Coat: Knarloc Green (Wash Black and Green)
Snakebite Leather Splodges
Gretchin Green Splodges
Rotted Flesh Flashes

(Sorry for using the same pics as I've posted before)
Cheers cheers Laney

Sneaky Arachas, very sneaky! Just Kidding I'll see what I can do - but you'll have to wait for the last couple of my orks and the chinork to be finished for the full rundown. I do have an 'Ard Boy I could paint soonish with a camo pattern (I was thinking a dark tiger stripe pattern).

Watch this space...

Finally got something to show you!

The recipe for this camouflage is...
Undercoat: Black
Basecoat: Charadon Granite

Wash: 50:50 mix Ogryn Flesh/Devlan Mud

Camo 1: Catachan Green

Camo 2: Camo Green

Camo 3: Gretchin Green
(No edge highlights - I think that works better on IG armour than orks)

Another mud wash will probably work well!

If anyone has any cool camo painting recipes or pics please post!

Cheers Laney Very Happy

Thanks a lot Laney. Not sure if I'll ever use camouflage as a painting technique but it is always useful to have a resource to check out.

Great work on the albino - I'll add further comments in on that topic.

It looks seriously cool on your pics... but when I tried it, the Gretchin Green came out all funky-disco looking. Of course, I didn't really HAVE GG... so I mixed Goblin Green with... I dunno... Rotting Flesh, I think. Didn't work. Wink

The camo green is quite vicious, too. But I think the secret lies in applying SMALL patches, right?

Thanks man! I want more!

Thanks Guys,

@ Arachas: Devlan Mud - great for toning down a paint job and making it look all dirty (I'll probably do that for this guy too). Goblin is probably a little bright - maybe catachan with a healthy dose of rotting flesh to make it paler (then at least it is another tone in roughly the right place). Small patches definitely look better and you can always add more.

I might do some urban or varangian camo next if I get time - the albino needs more paint!

Laney cheers

Varangian! But without the funky colors you use. What the hell is Deneb Stone? lol... Wink

I never got into the 'newer' GW colors. I'm old-fashioned...

Try a mix of khemri brown and bleached bone (about 1:3) - should be ok, particularly as khemri is part of the Varangian Gamma mix anyway.
