So I might hopefully maybe get around to painting my squad (They are now primed!) and have been trying to decide on a colour scheme I am torn between a quick but probably boring world war 2 Canadian battledress scheme and a more modern (and complex) cadpat camo like the Canadian army currently uses. Any suggestions?

I am glad you are planning to get your squad painted! Camo is tricky to paint well. I know Laney (I think) has a tutorial on it on here somewhere. I think the straight green would be a bit easier to get a nice result with.

Any plans for shoulderpad colours?

That green camo looks great - that is the way to go.

Just get your palette sorted out first and then use very small splodges! Areas of solid colour might be needed to keep the camo 'real' - otherwise it might just look like bad painting.

The old school khaki will be some much easier too, but I gotta remember that this is a squad not an army and so I shouldn't worry about that as much.

Somewhere on the internet there are pics of a guy who did his whole army in that camo scheme and a tutorial on how to do it. I couldn't find what I was looking for but I did find someone who did something similar (he seems to have added more brown than is "correct"). I think I might do shoulder pads and the flak armour a solid colour so they will stand out a bit more. And I will consider black I thought I might be able to get the small dot pattern from flicking paint off a tooth brush. What say the master artistes like Laney and Narcissus?

I have never painted camo, so I don't have too much to add. If I were to paint it, I think I would do the small dot pattern with a small stipple brush. I agree on the solid coloured shoulder pads.

You know this post means you are now committed to painting and finishing this squad, right? I'm looking forward to seeing your progress.

I did a "german" camo on my sniper... Looks like this:



It was just stabbing on the colours in layers - worked like a charm. You could probably be way more 'correct' than this, but I find that it works great on the table.

You could try the flicking paint thing - but I'd say go for the finest brush you've got and just dot (I like Komfrittens style too)

So I did a model up quickly of my tentative Colour Scheme. I'm still unsure on whether I like it or not might do up a khaki guy as well and see how he looks. I like the model! The Black pad 'breaks' the model nicely... well done! I think a few brown patches would work well.

A tip I discovered when I painted cammo... select your base color, then add FEW patches of color 2 and few patches of color 3 (some may go over color 2)... THEN paint few patches of color 1 (some may go over color 2 and/or 3), then very few color 2 (some may go over color 1 and/or 3). This creates the complete illusion of merging colors, rather than a polka-dot effect.

Damn...now I feel like I'm going to have to try for an urban camo when I eventually get to my Jenkalas. These results are just sweet and that sounds like a great tip Mord.

Looks really good Sean. A wash of Thraka Green (or Devlan Mud, or DM:TG mix) over the green camo would help to tie the splotches together and add some depth to the camo areas. Good work!

An effective camo scheme, but Narcissus is right, a quick wash (devlan mud all the way) would do wonders.

Looking at the original camo - there are areas of a pale green - like gretchin green. You might want to consider very small areas of this.
