Great, as always. The power swords look very nice, would you consider doing another tutorial please?

ISH: Thanks for your comment, it worked out well - I think (it was a while ago now) that Dozer and Mordheimer came up with that between them (he's finally a usable model - rather than a mini diorama). Mordheimer: It did take a while (stripes are slightly wonky though). Kiwi: I'll see what I can do (I'm thinking of using the Space Hulk style power sword painting for my blood angels (it looks like crackling energy on the sword). So maybe I can include both - might take a while though. For now, here's the formula for you to try out... Base ColourBlack undercoat on the sword (I almost always use black undercoat as a personal preference) Necron Abyss basecoat Layer with Mordian blue (leave the necron abyss showing in the darker recesses) Then (and you can vary this to suit taste/paints)...Enchanted blue heavy drybrush Hawk turquoise lighter drybrush (for me this is an essential stage - it creates the power field look) This last bit was suggested by Mordheimer and Drizzt to improve the original 'Ice Cold' Reismann model (and it worked)Ice blue highlight on the edges (with fine strikes only the edge of the blade) Skull white fine higlight on the edges (with very light strikes along the blade edge) Some pics to show you how close the Varangians are to completion! Sorry for the rubbish pics - I took them quickly this morning under awful lighting Cheers Laney

You can always use good old fashioned paint mixing - simply build up the blue, lighter and lighter from a dark blue base. The Hawk turquoise (or similar) is a useful colour to get for this process as it helps to add depth. I'll do a proper tutorial at some point. Cheers Laney

Thanks dwi! Good to hear from you . I'll finish these guys once and for all when my first truescale blood angel is fully painted (taken me three days so far - this is why I never have a competitive army and therefore love so much). Then there are five more and a terminator, furioso librarian dreadnought (might just leave that till later though), other half finished projects/squads (the renegades for example) and a special project that no one can know about (just in case I never actually do it!). I paint plenty of dodgy models I just don't post them here! Cheers Laney

He's not really a Varangian as such, but he does appear in the story... Achilles Cesare Inquisitor (Ordo Xenos) I completed him using NMM techniques and the result is pretty good - (I think) The mould lines on his plasma pistol are shocking I know - but the effort to get rid of them was just too much! Always love feedback... Cheers Laney

Thanks guys, Deafnala: Means a lot - no plan went into the colour scheme, I just picked up the GW foundation paints and applied until I'd used almost all of them. The model (Gideon Lorr Limited Edition) is so cool (I always think of a spaghetti western type gunfighter) that he kind of paints himself (A bit like the forgeworld inquisitor models, which are so detailed they kind of scare you a little ). The base is just a bit of an old CD case, smashed up with a pointy metal lump (I forget the name) and a hammer. The smashed pieces make great broken up concrete (and because of that they fit together really well) - the lava was a whim. Mordheimer: You are spot on. Achilles was an exercise in using washes (I did very little other than basecoat, highlight and then wash until I liked the effect! (The dark leather is calthan brown, highlighted khemri brown, washed with badab black and devlan mud. The lighter leather (on the torso) is khemri brown, washed once with devlan mud, highlighted with khemri (edges only) and then washed again (until I was happy!), The yellowed leather (on the external/back coat) was tausept ochre, gryphonne sepia wash, tausept ochre highlight wash again (focusing onto the recesses) use devlan mud for a starker highlight. I'll look to finish (as in every model) the Varangians during my Summer holidays. Work has unfortunately stopped us finishing two more campaign games. But it will restart in September with a full Death Squads campaign (maybe with a couple of new squads to try ). Cheers Laney

Holy crap!!! Somehow this is the first time i've seen this post and your modeling and painting are nothing short of amazing. The Inquisitor is perfect. Where did you get such a cool model?

| Cheers,
The model is a limited edition inquisitor called Gideon Lorr from GW. It's OOP, but you can pick it up on ebay reasonably easily (not cheap - but worth the investment!). It looks much nicer than the other witchhunter inquisitors out there.
